OCEANISTA DENMARK MARITIME MUSEUM
Exhibition ‘OCEANISTA – Fashion & the Sea’ at The Maritime Museum of Denmark, CPH.
Through clothing, films, photos and interviews, the exhibition sheds light on how fashion to this day has hailed, borrowed and stolen from the maritime style and culture. I am very honoured to have one of my fish skin clutched featured on the exhibition. I joined with fish leather manufacturers Nordic Fish Leather (former Atlantic Leather) to develop a collection of Fish leather accessories to increase the sustainability of fish leather products in the luxury fashion industry. Fish leather is a by-product of the fishing industry, uses ocean food waste, offers outstanding longevity and is highly biodegradable. The production process at Nordic Fish Leather makes use of renewable hydro and geothermal energy, combining traditional tanning techniques with the latest technologies. For the Wisteria clutch, water-based ink jet printing technology was used for the production of environmentally friendly prints and to mimic Arctic natural dyeing techniques.
The collaboration of museum curators and fashion designers is a fine example of an innovative way of linking the preservation of traditional knowledge and culture and the development of relevant fashion items taking in consideration the sustainable limits of the planet's natural resources. The exhibit will enhance both collaboration between museums and designers and promote the showcase of historical pieces in different contexts.
