NORDIC FISH LEATHER DAY

I am deeply grateful to Hlynur Arsaelsson, CEO of Nordic Fish Leather, and Justin De Kleer, funder of Leatherbox International B.V., the Netherlands for their kind invitation to present my work during the Fish Leather Study Day.

It was a pleasure to share my knowledge on fish leather through two lectures: "The Evolution of Fish Skin: Ancient Techniques and Contemporary Uses" and "Fish Leather Embellishments: Tradition Meets Modernity." The event provided a fantastic opportunity to engage with fellow fish leather enthusiasts and discuss sustainability in the fashion industry.

Nordic Fish Leather, is the biggest global fish leather tannery in the world. They have processed fish leather since 1994, rooted in an ancient tradition dating back to the 9th century when Vikings crafted shoes from the skins of wolfish. By surrounding themselves with a local network of filterers and fish farmers and by prioritizing players with ASC, MSC and GLOBAL G.A.P labels, they control, without intermediaries, their supply chain for Atlantic salmon, cod and wolfish skins and are part of a virtuous ecosystem. Hlynur Ársælsson, with a background in the seafood industry, has led the research and development since 2019.

Following my session, Daniel Ankarstrand, creator of the fashion brand Kristian Eddé, led an engaging hands-on workshop with fish leather.
